Just-in-time Manufacturing, Toyota Production System, and Lean Manufacturing

Just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing, also known as the Toyota Production System (TPS), is an integrated system that reduces time within the manufacturing system. It also reduces response times from suppliers and to customers. This methodology originated in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s at the Toyota Motor Corporation. One of its primary goals is to produce only the required quantity of products each day. This avoids the large inventories associated with traditional manufacturing systems. The term JIT manufacturing is also known as lean manufacturing.

Lean manufacturing is a system for organizing and managing a manufacturing enterprise by focusing on customer value and eliminating unnecessary activities. It also is continuously seeking improvements to create high quality and low-cost products with little waste or lead-time.

TPS is commonly used as a synonym for both JIT and lean manufacturing.
