Using a Direct Instruction model, teachers lead the whole class through instructional content, often via a lecture, demonstration, discussion or a tutorial. STEM Labs provide the content appropriate for direct instruction, but the teacher is often not required to present that content. Students will often be able to complete a reading, or watch a video, that delivers direct instruction in the forms of demonstrations, guided programming, etc. Teachers can have the students view the videos and then have the students complete the programming tasks that are explained within each video.
Some best practices for Teacher Direct Instruction:
Keep the segments of Direct Instruction short, in order to promote student engagement
Ask for whole class responses to check for understanding
Familiarize yourself with the content before sharing with the class
