  • Ensure the V5 Battery is charged before beginning.
  • Ensure students have the Mastering Jig inserted into the V5 Robotic Arm before beginning.
  • Point students to the VEX Robotics Knowledge Base if they have further questions about VEXcode V5 or the hardware.

In this section, you will first check the firmware of the V5 Brain to ensure it is up to date. If it is not, you will walk through the steps to update it. After the firmware has been checked and is up to date, you will use the ‘Arm Mastering’ example project to determine the mastering values for the V5 Robotic Arm that will be used in all subsequent Labs.

Determining the mastering values for the V5 Robotic Arm is important for two main reasons.

  1. It ensures that the V5 Robotic Arm is built and assembled properly. The potentiometer placement in the build is important and must be done properly in order for the V5 Robotic Arm to function as intended.
  2. Obtaining the mastering values ensures that the V5 Robotic Arm has a known location to start from. This allows the V5 Robotic Arm to be calibrated to the same known location. This is an important piece of information that is used when programming with VEXcode V5 to ensure that the V5 Robotic Arm moves as intended.

You will begin by checking the firmware to ensure that the V5 Brain functions correctly.
