Choice Board Examples & Strategies
Use the Choice Board to allow students to display their voice and choice within their learning. The Choice Board can be used in multiple ways by the teacher to:
- Engage students who finish early
- Assess what students have learned at different points throughout the Unit
- Extend the Unit or lesson
- Allow students to display their learning in the Share section
The Choice Board is intended to provide content that can be added to the classroom’s existing Choice Board or to any bulletin board in the classroom.

Shadow Play Remove the Sun from your Day/Night Build and attach it to a plate from the VEX GO Kit. With your teacher's permission, choose a spot outside and place your Sun in that exact spot at three different times during the school day. Draw a picture of the shadow made by your Sun. What explains the changes you see? |
Diorama Use a cardboard box and craft supplies to create a diorama that you can put your Day/Night Build into. You can add the Moon, stars, or other planets! |
Discover the Seasons Now that you know the science behind Day and Night, what about the seasons? Do some research to find out why we have four distinct seasons in a year. Create a pamphlet explaining the change of seasons. |
What Time Is It? Choose five places in the world, including where you are right now. Write down the time it is where you are, then research to find out what time it is in the four other places! What explains those different times? Find out and explain it to a friend. |
Day-Length Table A day on Earth is 23 Hours and 56 minutes long. But how long does it take for other planets to make one full rotation? Create a table showing how many hours each day lasts on the eight planets of our solar system. |
Pole Position At the North and South Poles, there is only one sunrise and one sunset each year? Why is this? Find out, then draw and label a diagram that explains why this is so. |
Picture Book Write a picture book for younger students that explains why day and night happens. |
Myths about Day and Night Many cultures have myths that attempt to explain why we have day and night. Find at least 2 books in your school or classroom library and read them! |
24 ways to make 24! There are 24 hours in a day. Can you come up with 24 ways to write math equations that equal 24? You can combine addition, subtraction, multiplication, and addition in any way you want, as long as 24 is the answer! |
