Practice

In the last section, you learned how adding mass and changing the center of mass can affect how a robot performs. Now, you are going to apply what you have learned with the Adding Mass for Tug of War practice activity.

In this activity, you will test your robot's pulling power by adding pieces from the IQ Kit to it, in order to increase the mass.

Watch the video below to see how you can apply what you have learned to complete the Adding Mass for Tug of War practice activity.

Now it's your turn to complete the Adding Mass for Tug of War practice activity!

BaseBot with additional beams and plates added over the Travel Tires to show an example of how the center of mass could be altered in the practice activity.

As you complete the Adding Mass for Tug of War practice activity, document the additions made to the BaseBot, and how that changed the center of mass in your engineering notebook. After each round, record which team won Tug of War.

Notebook page labeled Tug of War with a data chart of Trial 1. Sketches of the robot and components are included, with the results of the match reading Lost.

Prepare for the Challenge

In Compete (on the next page), you will play the Tug of War Challenge. Learn how to compete in the challenge, check your understanding, then practice for the challenge.

In the following video, two BaseBots with a gear train and additional mass are attached to one another with a rope. When both are started at the same time, they move left and right and then determine a winner in the Tug of War competition.

Follow the steps in this document to learn more about how to complete this challenge.
