Compete
Now that you have modified your BaseBot by changing the center of mass, you are ready for the Tug of War challenge. In the following video, two BaseBots with a gear train and additional mass are attached to one another with a rope. When both are started at the same time, they move left and right and then determine a winner in the Tug of War competition.
Follow the steps in this document to complete the Tug of War Challenge. Google Doc / .docx / .pdf
Once you have completed the Tug of War Challenge, ensure you have documented the results of the challenge in your engineering notebook.
Wrap Up Reflection
Now that you have added weight to your robot by building an addition, and competed in the Tug of War challenge, it is time to reflect on what you have learned and done in this Lesson. Start a new page in your engineering notebook to start your reflection.
Rate yourself as a novice, apprentice, or expert on each of the following concepts in your engineering notebook. Provide a brief explanation for why you gave yourself that rating for each concept:
- Changing the center of mass affects a robot's movement
- How different centers of mass affect robots in the Tug of War Challenge
- Collaborating with your team to create an addition
Use this table to help you determine which category you fall under.
Expert | I feel that I fully understood the concept and could teach this to someone else. |
Apprentice | I feel that I understood the concept enough to compete in the challenge. |
Novice | I feel that I did not understand the concept and do not know how to complete the challenge. |
What is Next?
Now that you have added a rope attachment, a gear train, and an attachment to your robot, it is time to play Tug of War!
In the next Lesson, you will:
- Go over the rules of the competition
- Use the engineering design process to improve your robot's design
- Compete in Tug of War
