Career Connections

The following careers use skills and concepts that you practiced in this Unit. Choose one of these careers and complete an activity from the Choice Board.

Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineer designing and testing devices, symbolizing creativity and analytical skills in engineering.

Many of the objects and tools that you see and use every day have passed through the hands of a mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineers design, develop, build, and test devices and objects that can be used in the real world. To do this, they need to be both creative and analytical, so that they can make informed choices about their design and how to improve it. Mechanical engineers work collaboratively, and need to be able to communicate how their design or build functions to others. Many of the skills and processes you used to iterate and compete in Tug of War with your robot, are used by mechanical engineers every day.

Robotics Technician

Technicians working on a robot prototype, showcasing design and testing processes in a collaborative environment.

Robotics technicians work with robotics engineers to build and test robots. In order for robots to function as intended in the real world, many rounds of building, testing, and iterating must take place. Robotics technicians conduct tests to study and analyze the performance of robots in development, as well as help to build, program, and maintain robots to keep them functioning efficiently. The testing process that you underwent with your robot for the Tug of War competition, is similar to the ways robotics technicians work with robots each day.
