Manually Moving Disks

Activity Outline
In this activity, students will be introduced to the Electromagnet tool with the VEX V5 Workcell. Students will explore how to create a project where the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell uses the Electromagnet tool to pick up and drop off colored disks in a specific location.
Students will display the (x, y, z) coordinate locations on the V5 Brain’s screen to find the locations that the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell will need to move to in order to pick up and drop off disks. Students will then use these locations to explore how to trigger behaviors of the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell by building a project that uses a User Interface (UI) on the V5 Brain.
The UI on the V5 Brain will display four colored boxes (white, red, green, and blue). Each color corresponds to a particular movement of the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell. The white boxes will move the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell to the disk pick up location and each of the colored boxes will move the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell to that colored disks drop off location.
Students will complete the activity by successfully moving all three colored disks (red, green, and blue) to their accompanying drop off location using the UI on the V5 Brain’s screen.

Teacher Tips
- Ensure the V5 Battery is charged before beginning.
- Ensure the V5 Brain is connected to a device before beginning.
- Point students to the VEX Robotics Knowledge Base if they have further questions about VEXcode V5 or the hardware.
- Ensure students have their mastering values readily available from Lab 1.
- Ensure the students change the [Set tool] block to 'electromagnet.’ If this is missed, the arm mounted on the VEX V5 Workcell may not move as intended.
- Remind students that the z-coordinate value should raise the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell up enough to not collide with any standoffs, especially when transporting a disk.
- Students may need to adjust the location values multiple times when testing to obtain a more accurate location.
In this section, you will be introduced to the Electromagnet tool with VEX V5 Workcell. You will explore how to create a project where the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell uses the Electromagnet tool to pick up and drop off colored disks in a specific location.
First, you will display the (x, y, z) coordinate locations on the V5 Brain’s screen to find the locations that the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell will need to move to in order to pick up and drop off disks. You will then use these locations to explore how to trigger behaviors of the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell by building a project that uses a User Interface (UI) on the V5 Brain.
The UI on the V5 Brain will display four colored boxes (white, red, green, and blue). Each color corresponds to a particular movement of the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell. The white box will move the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell to the disk pick up location and each of the colored boxes will move the arm mounted on the V5 Workcell to that colored disks drop off location.
You will complete the activity by successfully moving all three colored disks (red, green, and blue) to their accompanying drop off location using the UI on the V5 Brain’s screen.
You will begin by locating coordinates.
