Description

  • Students will be introduced to the Electromagnet and explore how to create a project where VEX V5 Workcell uses the Electromagnet tool to pick up and drop off colored disks in a specific location.
  • Students will also read about palletizing, pick and place robots, and pick and place cycles in manufacturing.

Essential Question(s)

  • How do user programs control the behavior of a robot?
  • How can an electromagnet be used in palletization?

Understanding(s)

Students will understand:

  • How do user programs control the accuracy and repeatability?
  • How does a user program control which pallet location a package is placed in during palletization?

Objective(s)

  • Follow a procedure to test the Electromagnet by turning it on and off.
  • Pick up and drop off objects using the Electromagnet.
  • Drop off objects by programming the robot using known locations.

Vocabulary

Palletizing
The process of moving parts onto a pallet to be transported.
Pick and Place Cycle
The amount of time it takes for a gripper to pick up an object, place it into the desired location, and return to its start position.
Pick and Place Robot
A robot designed to pick up objects and place them in a specific location.
User Interface (UI)
A device which allows a person to control the behavior of the robot.

Educational Standard(s)

  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) HS-ETS1-2: Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.
  • International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 5b: Students collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making.
  • International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 5d: Students understand how automation works and use algorithmic thinking to develop a sequence of steps to create and test automated solutions.
