Description

  • Students explore how variables are used to store values in a VEXcode V5 project. They will use variables and repeat loops to move the arm mounted on the VEX V5 Workcell in precise, incremental movements. Students will also use variables and the Midpoint Formula to find the midpoint between two locations on the Workcell.
  • Students will also learn about careers in Robotics and Automation, including the tasks performed and the skills needed for these careers.

Essential Question(s)

  • What is a variable and how can variables be used to control the behavior of a robot?

Understanding(s)

Students will understand:

  • How to use variables to store information in a VEXcode V5 project.

Objective(s)

  • Define what a variable is and how it is used in programming.
  • Use a variable to recall a stored location in order to program the robot to move in different motions.

Vocabulary

Device Configuration
Defining the robot’s inputs and outputs within a user program.
Variable
A value that can change and can be used throughout a user program.

Educational Standard(s)

  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) HS-ETS1-4: Use a computer simulation to model the impact of proposed solutions to a complex real-world problem with numerous criteria and constraints on interactions within and between systems relevant to the problem.
  • International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 6c: Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.
  • Computer Science Teaching Association (CSTA) 1B-AP-09: Create programs that use variables to store and modify data.
