Description
Students will add the Bumper Switch to their Workcell, and code it to simulate an emergency stop (E-stop). They will learn about the safety mechanisms and precautions to use with the Workcell. They will learn about what an E-stop is and when to use it. Students will also learn about regulatory agencies, common safety mechanisms, and workplace safety precautions that help keep workers safe when working alongside robots. Then, students will look for pinch points on their own Workcell, and discuss safety precautions in real-world applications.
Essential Question(s)
- What are the safety mechanisms and precautions when using the Workcell?
Understanding(s)
Students will understand:
-
What an emergency stop is and when to use it.
-
What pinch points are, and where they are found on the Workcell.
-
How to code the Bumper Switch to simulate an emergency stop.
Objective(s)
-
Identify that an emergency stop is a mechanism that will completely stop its assigned equipment or electrical circuit.
-
Identify that an emergency stop is used when the machine's functioning becomes a hazard to individuals, other machinery, or itself.
-
Identify that the Bumper Switch on the Workcell simulates an emergency stop.
-
Identify that pinch points occur wherever a moving object comes in contact with another object.
-
Identify the pinch points on the Workcell.
-
Identify how to launch VEXcode V5.
-
Identify how to connect your device running VEXcode V5 to the V5 Brain on the Workcell.
-
Identify how to name and save a VEXcode V5 project.
-
Identify how to add a device to the robot configuration in VEXcode V5.
-
Identify how to use the {When bumper} and [Activate emergency stop] blocks in a VEXcode V5 project to code the Bumper Switch to simulate an emergency stop.
-
Identify how to download, run, and stop a VEXcode V5 project.
Vocabulary
- Emergency Stop (E-stop)
- A mechanism that will completely stop its assigned equipment or electrical circuit.
- Pinch Points
- Occur wherever a moving object comes in contact with another object. This could be an arm with a platform, two gears intermeshing, two sections of an arm, or any number of things involved with robotics.
- Bumper Switch
- A digital switch with a spring-loaded bumper that can be pushed in to change the state of the switch.

Educational Standard(s)
- Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) HS-ETS1-3: Evaluate a solution to a complex real-world problem based on prioritized criteria and trade-offs that account for a range of constraints, including cost, safety, reliability, and aesthetics as well as possible social, cultural, and environmental impacts.
- International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 5c: Students break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.
- Common Core State Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
