Mechanical Engineers

The following disciplines are also involved in robotics and automation careers by the roles given below:

  • Computer Scientists, Software Engineers: Development of robotics and automation software and applications, Industry 4.0/Internet of Things (IoT) projects, data mining and artificial intelligence (AI) in complex systems, and machine learning.
  • Electrical and Computer Engineers, Electronics Engineer: Software (similar to those of computer scientists and software engineers) and robot/hardware development for robotics and automation applications, also including Industry 4.0/Internet of Things (IoT) projects.
  • Manufacturing Engineers: Programming of industrial robots, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and computer-numerically controlled (CNC) machines, and the integration of automated manufacturing work-cells and systems. Digital manufacturing including 3D scanning/printing.
  • Mechanical Engineers: Robot and automated transport/material handling system development, and possibly taking a role of a manufacturing engineer with appropriate additional education and training.
  • Robotics Scientists: Requires at least an MS degree in any of the fields mentioned previously. New robotics applications include the developments of collaborative robots (co-bots), humanoids with human functionalities, AI, unmanned vehicles including drones, soft robotics and grippers, self-folding and -reconfiguring robots as well as the many areas of service robotics.
