Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs

STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX GO. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX GO. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs article.

Goals and Standards

Goals

Students will apply

  • How to drive their Hero Robot to score the most points in the Mars Math Expedition Competition.
  • How to collaborate successfully with their team to create a strategy for the Mars Math Expedition Competition.
  • How to use practice and data to create a strategy with their team in order to compete in the Mars Math Expedition Competition.

Students will make meaning of

  • How to participate in a VEX GO competition successfully.
  • How to work with a team to compete in the Mars Math Expedition competition.

Students will be skilled at

  • Collecting and using data from practicing to make informed decisions about competition strategy with their teams.
  • Driving the Hero Robot to complete game tasks during the Mars Math Expedition competition.
  • Collaborating to create a strategy for competing in the Mars Math Expedition competition.
  • Calculating the score at the end of a Mars Math Expedition competition match.

Students will know

  • How to use practice time to iterate on their team strategy in order to improve it.
  • How to drive the Hero Robot to complete game tasks during the Mars Math Expedition competition.
  • How to work with a team to participate in the Mars Math Expedition Competition.

Objective(s)

Objective

  1. Students will demonstrate how to use data to create a strategy with their team for competing in the Mars Math Expedition competition.
  2. Students will demonstrate collaboration and teamwork to participate in the Mars Math Expedition competition.

Activity

  1. In Play Part 1, students will practice and collect data about their team's performance on each of the competition tasks, and analyze it to create a strategy for competing in the Mars Math Expedition Competition. They will iterate on this strategy in order to improve their ability to score points in the competition. They will then use their strategy in Play Part 2 as they compete in the Mars Math Expedition Competition.
  2. In Play Part 1, students will collaborate effectively to create a strategy for competing in the Mars Math Expedition Competition. In Play Part 2, students will demonstrate collaboration and teamwork as they apply their strategy from Play Part 1 to score as many points as possible in the competition.

Assessment

  1. In Play Part 1, they will use the Data Collection Sheet to document their strategy and the changes they make to it as they iterate in order to improve it. In the Share section of the Lab, they will discuss how their team used data to create and improve on their competition strategy.
  2. In Play Part 2, students will demonstrate collaboration and teamwork during the competition as they participate in their matches together, applying the strategy they have created to score as many points as possible during the competition. During the Share section, students will discuss how they were a good teammate during the competition, and what they learned about being on a team that helped them to be successful in the competition.
