The Workcell E-stop
Teacher Toolbox
-
Introducing the Workcell E-stop page
-
Introduce the Play activity to the whole class.
-
Tell the students that they will create a new project to add the Arm and Bumper Switch devices to the Robot Configuration in VEXcode V5.
-
Once the devices are added, students will code the Bumper Switch to act as an E-stop button for the Workcell.
-
Explain to students that having an E-stop in the Workcell is important to keep everyone safe. If the Workcell begins to function in a way that was not intended, or it needs to stop moving at any time, the E-stop provides a quick and accessible way to stop the Workcell.
-
After coding the Bumper Switch using VEXcode V5, students will complete the activity by testing the E-stop button on the Workcell to observe how using the E-stop button stops the VEXcode V5 project.
-
Tell students that they will begin by creating a new project. Information on how to facilitate the activity is on the next page.

Teacher Tips
- Ensure students have begun charging the V5 Battery and attached it to the V5 Brain. View the following articles for more information:
- Ensure students can access VEXcode V5 on their device. If students do not have access to VEXcode V5 on their device, navigate to this page in order to access VEXcode V5.
- Students should have checked if their V5 Brain has up to date firmware. If the firmware is not up to date, view this article for more information on how to update it.
In this section, you will code an emergency stop (E-stop) button using VEXcode V5.
You will begin by creating a new project and adding the V5 Workcell and Bumper Switch devices to the Robot Configuration in VEXcode V5.
Once the devices are added, you will code the Bumper Switch to act as an E-stop button for the Workcell. Having an E-stop in the Workcell is important to keep you and others around you safe. If the Workcell begins to function in a way that was not intended, or you need to stop it from moving at any time, the E-stop provides a quick and accessible way to stop the Workcell.
