Compete
Now that you have used the Controller to score as many Buckyballs as possible in 30 seconds, you are ready for the Buckyball Baskets Challenge!
The goal of this challenge is to use the Controller to drive your CatapultBot to score as many Buckyballs as you can to obtain a high score in two minutes. Watch the animation below to see an example of how your robot could move in this challenge. You'll see that the CatapultBot starts in the center of the field with 2 minutes on the timer. It rotates itself to point the catapult towards the Bucky Ball in the bottom right of the field. It pulls the Bucky Ball onto the catapult and launches the Bucky Ball through the hoop to make its first goal by the 1:50 mark on the timer. The CatapultBot then launches the other two BuckyBalls through the hoop, with the animation skipping through time until you see that the robot has successfully scored 5 goals by the time the timer reaches 0 seconds.
Follow the steps in this document to complete the Buckyball Baskets Challenge.
Once you have completed the Buckyball Baskets Challenge, check in with your teacher. Ensure you have documented the results of the challenge in your engineering notebook.
Wrap Up Reflection
Now that you have used the Controller to score Buckyballs, iterated on different strategies to drive and score including changing the driver configurations or adjusting how many rubber bands are on the CatapultBot, and competed in the Buckyball Baskets Challenge, it is time to reflect on what you have learned and done in this Lesson. Start a new page in your engineering notebook to start your reflection.
Rate yourself as a novice, apprentice, or expert on each of the following concepts in your engineering notebook. Provide a brief explanation for why you gave yourself that rating for each concept:
- Documenting the results of multiple tries of driving the CatapultBot and using that information to make data-driven decisions on what to change next and why
- Controlling the intake and catapult mechanisms on the CatapultBot using the Controller
- Collaborative decision-making with my teammates
Use this table to help you determine which category you fall under.
Expert | I feel that I fully understood the concept and could teach this to someone else. |
Apprentice | I feel that I understood the concept enough to compete in the challenge. |
Novice | I feel that I did not understand the concept and do not know how to complete the challenge. |
What is Next?
In this Lesson, you learned how to control the CatapultBot's intake and catapult using the Controller and competed in the Buckyball Baskets Challenge. Now it is time to compete in the Bucky Basketball competition!
In the next Lesson, you will:
- Go over the rules of the competition
- Develop a game strategy
