Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs

STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX GO. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX GO. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs article.

Goals and Standards

Goals

Students will apply

  • Using the Pantograph to create scaled copies of a drawing.

Students will make meaning of

  • How the Pantograph is a tool that creates scaled drawings.
  • How to compare the scale of different drawings.

Students will be skilled at

  • Tracing drawings with the Pantograph.
  • Comparing larger and smaller scaled drawings.
  • Building the Pantograph from Build Instructions.

Students will know

  • How to manipulate the Pantograph to create drawings of different scales.

Objective(s)

Objective

  1. Students will demonstrate how to trace objects to create scaled drawings using the Pantograph.
  2. Students will compare the scale of different drawings.

Activity

  1. In Play Part 1, students will trace VEX GO pieces, and then trace those shapes with the Pantograph to create a scaled drawing.
  2. In Play Part 1 and Play Part 2, students will compare the size of the drawings created with the Pantograph with the original VEX GO pieces to determine scale.

Assessment

  1. In Play Part 2, students will trace their small drawings to create a larger drawing. Students will share their drawings in the Mid-Play Break and Share sections.

  2. In the Mid-Play Break and Share sections, students will discuss how their drawings compare to one another, and to the original VEX GO pieces they traced, in terms of scale.
