Encouraging Vocabulary Usage
The following are additional ways to facilitate vocabulary usage as students are engaged in the activities throughout this Unit.
Students should be encouraged to use the vocabulary terms:
- Throughout all of the activities
- As they are working in groups
- As they are reflecting
- As they are sharing their knowledge and experience
Tips for Encouraging Vocabulary Usage
- Word Illustrations - Allow students to draw a picture of each vocabulary word. Display the pictures around the classroom with the word underneath. Encourage students to add to the pictures so that each word has a mosaic of different illustrations.
- Acrostic Poem - Write an acrostic poem for each vocabulary term, using the letters to determine the first word in each line. This can get really challenging when words are longer!
- Word Map - Word maps help deepen understanding of a vocabulary word by relating it to other words and concepts students already know.
