Lesson 2: Claw Design

Practice

In the last section, you learned about the elements of a claw and how a claw works. Now, you are going to apply what you have learned to iterate on the build to complete the Improve Your Claw practice activity.

In this activity, your Clawbot will have to drive to an IQ Cube, collect the cube with the claw, and drive it to the opposite side of the Field. You will iterate on the design of the claw to improve your robot's ability to move the cube around the Field. Watch the video below to see how you can apply what you have learned to complete the Improve Your Claw practice activity.

Now it's your turn to complete the Improve Your Claw practice activity!

In this animation, a Controller is used to drive the robot to the cube, collect it with the claw, then move the cube to the opposite side of the Field. This animation shows one possible way your robot could move to complete the Improve Your Claw practice activity.

Use this document as a reference to complete the practice activity.

As you complete the Improve Your Claw practice activity, document your designs and testing in your engineering notebook.

  • Describe and illustrate your design.
  • What is the first thing that you changed on your claw? Why?
  • How did it perform in the activity?
  • How did you iterate on this design to improve your robot's performance in the practice activity?

See the image on the left for an example of how you can record your design ideas and tests.

Prepare for the Challenge

In Compete (on the next page), you will test your claw designs in the Grab and Go Challenge. Learn how to compete in the challenge, check your understanding, then practice for the challenge.

The goal of this challenge is to use the Controller to drive your robot and move three cubes from one side of the Field to the other in the least amount of time.

Watch this animation to see an example of a Clawbot moving the three cubes from one side of the Field to another.

Follow the steps in this document to learn more about how to complete this challenge.
