Congratulations! Now that you have completed the Capstone Mission, it is time to reflect on your progress throughout this course. With each mission, you learned more about piloting the VEX AIR Drone, using the VEX AIR Flight Simulator, and the controls on the VEX AIR Drone Controller. Before moving on, take a moment to reflect on your learning with your class, calculate your total flight information, and complete your course certificate.
Reflect on Your Progress
Think back to the very first unit in this course. You were likely a complete beginner, starting from scratch to learn about drones and how to fly in the simulator. You have come a long way in a short time! Reflection is an important learning tool, as it allows you to remind yourself of all that you have learned and accomplished.
Review the following questions to prepare for a whole-class discussion:
- What is the most impactful thing you learned in this course? Why?
- What was your biggest challenge in this course? Why? What did you learn from it?
- If you could go back and repeat one mission from the course, what would it be? Why?
- Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10 for how confident you were about flying a drone at the start of the course, and now. Is your rating similar or different? Why?
In the next course, you will apply all that you learned in the simulator to flying the physical drone.
- What are you looking forward to learning about? Why?
- What is something you are excited to try with the physical drone? Why?
- How well do you think you will be able to transfer your simulator training to the drone? Why?

Come together for a whole-class discussion to reflect together on all that students have learned and accomplished in the course. Use the questions here as a jumping off point. Encourage students to write down answers to the questions and look back at their Mission Logs to prepare for the discussion.
Celebrate students' collective success and keep the discussion positive. This is a time to reflect on challenges they faced, and highlight the growth that came from overcoming those challenges.
While students will be moving on to using the physical drone in the next course, they will continue to use the simulator to help them prepare for flights. Use this discussion as an opportunity to identify if there are any missions that students may benefit from revisiting before moving on.
Mission Log Summary
Your Mission Logs are a record of every flight you have taken in the VEX AIR Flight Simulator. This is valuable information about your pilot training. Now that you have completed the VEX AIR Virtual Flight Course, you can total your flights and flight time using your Mission Logs.
Total Flights and Flight Time
Look back at all of your Mission Logs from the start of the course through the Capstone Mission.
- Add up the total number of flights you completed in the course.
- Add up every flight's duration, and determine how many hours, minutes, and seconds you logged in the simulator.
Record your totals on your Virtual Flight Certificate.

Student's Mission Log data can be used to tell them a lot about their progress throughout the course. Total flights and flight time are just the top of the iceberg. If you want students to look at additional metrics using their data, you could have them also:
- Break down total flights/flight time by simulator layout - What percentage of flights were in the Rings layout vs. the Competition layout? How much time did they spend in each?
- Total the number of rings they flew through, or total number of cargo or orbit balls delivered throughout the course.
- Total their collisions and look at the trends over time - How did their collisions improve from the start to the end of Unit 7?
Celebrate the whole class's success by totaling the total flights and flight time for the group. Once each student has calculated their totals, add them to a class list to calculate your total class summary. Make this a visible display to help share students' simulator experience with others.
Congratulations!
Now that you have your total flights and flight time, you can complete your certificate for this course. Enter your totals on the certificate and celebrate your success! A certificate template can be found here (Google / .pdf).
Use this link to print student certificates, and add their flight data. (Google / .pdf) The certificate can be edited to best meet the needs of your students.
Have students preserve their progress by compiling all of their Mission Logs, together with their certificate, into one document. If you used printed Mission Logs, that can be a binder, folder, or bound copy. If you used digital Mission Logs, have students collect all of their documents into one folder, or print them out for display.
