How do I solve a challenge with the Code Base and VEXcode GO?

Unit Understandings

The following concepts will be covered throughout this Unit:

How students, VEXcode GO, and the Code Base can work together to solve problems.
How to create a plan that correctly orders behaviors in a sequence in order to solve a challenge. This can be done both individually and collaboratively.
How to communicate behaviors, through words and gestures, that the Code Base will need to execute in order to accomplish a task.

Lab 1 - Robot Job Interview

Main Focus Question: What kinds of jobs do robots do?

Students will learn that robots complete jobs that are dirty, dull, and dangerous.
Students will build the Code Base 2.0 and connect it to a device, then start a project.

Lab 2 - Sewer Robot

Main Focus Question: How do I drive forward and in reverse?

Students will use VEXcode GO to make their Code Base drive forward and in reverse a specific distance.
Students will discuss what a drivetrain is and how it functions on the Code Base.

Lab 3 - Warehouse Robot

Main Focus Question: How do I make turns?

Students will use VEXcode GO to make their Code Base perform left and right turns.

Lab 4 - Robot Job Fair

Main Focus Question: How do I create and execute a plan?

Students will create a project plan so the Code Base can perform a task that is easy, dirty, dull, or dangerous.
Students will create a scenario and then create a project that solves the solution.

Unit Standards

Unit Standards will be addressed in every Lab within the Unit.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.A.1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.

How Standard is Achieved: In Lab 1, during Engage, students will use spatial reasoning skills to describe objects as they build the Code Base. Additionally, in both Play sections, students will use spatial reasoning skills to make a connection between the project they created and how the Code Base moves.

In Lab 2, Play Part 1 and Mid-Play Break, students will predict where the Code Base travels and explain where the Code Base ends up.

In Lab 3, Play Part 1 and Mid-Play Break, students will predict where the Code Base travels and explain where it ended up. Students will also describe how the wheels need to move in order for the Code Base to turn.

In Lab 4, During Engage and Play sections, students will use spatial reasoning skills to plan a VEXcode GO project for the Code Base. They will explain what kind of job the Code Base will do and how they will complete that task.

CSTA 1A-AP-10: Develop programs with sequences and simple loops, to express ideas or address a problem.

How Standard is Achieved: In Lab 1, during Share, students will sequence the steps in the correct order to start a VEX GO project.

In Lab 2, In both Play sections, students will create a project for the Code Base to go to a specific location.

In Lab 3 Play sections, students will create a project for the Code Base to turn and move in a square.

In Lab 4 Play sections, students will create a project for their robot to complete a task that solves a problem.

Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA)

CSTA 1B-AP-11: Decompose (break down) problems into smaller, manageable subproblems to facilitate the program development process.

How Standard is Achieved: In Lab 1, during Mid-Play Break, students will break down the steps needed to use VEXcode GO and the Code Base to create a project.

In Lab 2 Play sections, students will break down the steps needed to create a project using VEXcode GO and the Code Base to drive to a certain location.

In Lab 3 Play sections, students will break down the steps needed to create a project using VEXcode GO and the Code Base to successfully turn and drive in a square.

In Lab 4 Play Sections, students will break down their Robot task into smaller more manageable parts to create a project the Code Base can follow.
