Encouraging Vocabulary Usage
The following are additional ways to facilitate vocabulary usage as students are engaged in the activities throughout this Unit.
Students should be encouraged to use the vocabulary terms:
- Throughout all of the activities
- As they are working in groups
- As they are reflecting
- As they are sharing their knowledge and experience
Tips for Encouraging Vocabulary Usage
- What Am I? – Turn vocabulary practice into a game, by writing vocabulary words onto index cards and taping them to students' backs. Have students walk around the room and give clues and descriptions of the definitions to get one another to guess which word they have on their backs. Challenge your students to a timed trial, to see how quickly they can guess all of the vocabulary words together. This is a great way to foster good communication and vocabulary acquisition!
- Vocabulary Journal – Have students create a journal entry about each word as they are working throughout the Unit and using that vocabulary word in practice. The journal entry could describe a compromise they made with their team, or a discovery they made about disaster relief efforts in their area during a class discussion. The goal is to have an entry with a real world connection to each word by the end of the Unit. This can be a great addition to a bulletin board or a class reflective discussion at the close of the competition.
