Compete

Now that you have iterated on your arm design and practiced stacking Buckyballs with your robot, you are ready to compete in the Stacked Up Challenge!

The goal of this timed trial challenge is to drive your robot with a Controller to stack Buckyballs onto rings. Your score in the challenge will be determined based on the number of Buckyballs you stack onto rings by the end of the 60-second time period. Watch the animation below to see an example of how your robot could move in this challenge.

In this animation, the Clawbot begins in the center of the lower wall on the Field. There are two blue rings on blank line intersections opposite the robot, and three red Buckyballs on three different Field Tiles on the left and right center of the field. When the timer starts counting down, the robot first drives and turns to the left to grasp the red Buckyball, then drives to stack it on the blue ring on the left. It then reverses and drives to the right side red cube, and attempts to stack it onto the right blue ring. In the final seconds the robot stacks the remaining Buckyball on top of the right stack.

Follow the steps in this document to complete the Stacked Up Challenge.

Once you have completed the Stacked Up Challenge, check in with your teacher. Ensure you have documented the results of the challenge in your engineering notebook.

Wrap Up Reflection

Now that you have modified your robot design, and competed in the Stacked Up Challenge, it is time to reflect on what you have learned and done in this Lesson. Start a new page in your engineering notebook to begin your reflection.

Rate yourself as a novice, apprentice, or expert on each of the following concepts in your engineering notebook. Provide a brief explanation for why you gave yourself that rating for each concept:

  • Designing, building and iterating on your arm design
  • Using the arm to stack Buckyballs
  • Collaborating with my team members to come up with and test arm designs

Use this table to help you determine which category you fall under.

Expert I feel that I fully understood the concept and could teach this to someone else.
Apprentice I feel that I understood the concept enough to compete in the challenge.
Novice I feel that I did not understand the concept and do not know how to complete the challenge.

What is Next?

In this Lesson, you learned about different robot arm designs and improved your build.

In the next Lesson, you will

  • Learn about motor groups in VEXcode EXP
  • Choose a driver for the competition
  • Compete in the Up and Over Challenge!
