Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs

STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX GO. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX GO. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs article.

Goals and Standards

Goals

Students will apply

  • How to build a Pendulum Kerplunk game.
  • How to experiment using different rules, objectives, and goals to create a new game.

Students will make meaning of

  • How can technology be used to make games and other real world solutions.
  • How can we use the iterative process to make other solutions more refined in our world.

Students will be skilled at

  • Build a pendulum game using the VEX GO Kit.
  • Experiment different ways to make a pendulum game using alternative rules, obstacles, and objectives to winning.

Students will know

  • How to build a pendulum game following directions.
  • How to use the iterative process to experiment different ways to create an authentic game using the Pendulum and VEX GO Kit.

Objective(s)

Objective

  1. Students will identify how to create a game using the Pendulum with the VEX GO Kit.
  2. Students will experiment how to create a new pendulum game using the VEX GO Kit.

Activity

  1. Students will work in teams to identify how to create a game with scoring using the Pendulum and pieces from the VEX GO Kit.
  2. Students will work in teams to experiment using the pendulum game to make a new game with different rules, objective and scoring process.

Assessment

  1. As a team, students will identify how to create a game using the Pendulum and VEX GO pieces. Visual observation will show if the team works together as a team and completes the game.
  2. As a team, students will experiment how to make an original game. Visual observation will show if the team works together as a team.
