Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs

STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX GO. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX GO. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. Activity

Students will work in teams to identify how to create a game with scoring using the Pendulum and pieces from the VEX GO Kit.
Students will work in teams to experiment using the pendulum game to make a new game with different rules, objective and scoring process.

Assessment

As a team, students will identify how to create a game using the Pendulum and VEX GO pieces. Visual observation will show if the team works together as a team and completes the game.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)

ISTE - (4) Innovative Designer - 4a: Students know and use deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.

How Standard is Achieved: In Lab 2, this ISTE standard is met in the Play Part 1 and 2 activities through the building and experimenting of the Pendulum Kerplunk game. Students will first design the Pendulum Kerplunk game as a class and then as teams will develop alternate directions, objectives and goals to create a new game for the class to play as a two-person game.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)

ISTE - (4) Innovative Designer - 4c: Students develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.

How Standard is Achieved: In Lab 2, this ISTE standard is met in the Engage, and Play Part 2 sections. Students in the Engage section must work together to debug and put together their Pendulum build. In the Play Part 2 section, students will test and debug their alternate pendulum game to make sure that their creation works and can be played by their fellow classmates.
