Unit Essential Question(s)
How can I use the 123 Robot to support the development of self-regulation?
Unit Understandings
The following concepts will be covered throughout this Unit:
The behaviors of the 123 Robot can be connected to human behaviors.
How to explain the connection between how I feel and my behavior.
That I can use a sequence of robot behaviors to represent human behaviors.
Lab Summary
Click on the following tabs for a summary of what the students will do and learn in each lab.
Lab
1
-
Rowdy Robots
Students will engage in a story about a class of 123 Robots who are too out of control to make it to afternoon story time in the school library.
Students will describe the robot behaviors they see and then break into groups to create their own projects to make their 123 Robot behave as if it is out of control. All groups will place their robots on the Field, start their projects at the same time, and describe what happens when the whole class full of robots seems unable to control their actions.
Students will discuss with their teacher the behaviors that children would need to show in order to successfully go to the library and enjoy afternoon story time.
Students will then break into small groups to choose combinations of Coder Cards that could represent these behaviors using the 123 Robot.
Students will share the Coder cards they chose and explain the reasoning for their choices.
Lab
2
-
Calm Down Codes
Students will discuss what it looks like, feels like, and sounds like when humans are calm, and explore the idea that people use strategies to calm themselves down when they are feeling strong emotions.
Students will list strategies for calming down, and then work together with the teacher to choose Coder Cards to represent one calm-down strategy with the 123 Robot.
Students will engage in a discussion about how sometimes more than one calm-down strategy is needed for humans to manage the behavior associated with an emotion. The class will choose more Coder cards representing an additional calm-down strategy to add to their project, creating a “Calm Down Code”.
Students will then create their own “Calm Down Codes” in their small groups, sequencing multiple strategies together.
Students will share their “Calm Down Codes” and explain their reasoning, modeling how they would use them to help themselves calm down when needed.
Unit Standards
Unit Standards will be addressed in every Lab within the Unit.
Common Core State Standards
(CCSS)
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.6:
Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.
How Standard is Achieved:
In Lab 1, students describe behaviors they see when the 123 Robot is acting out of control, and the behaviors children would need to have in order to successfully participate in story time. They use language to describe the connection of human behaviors to possible robot behaviors. During Share, students explain their reasoning when choosing Coder cards for their robot’s behavior. In Lab 2, students discuss sequencing multiple behaviors into more complex “Calm Down Codes”, clearly expressing their understanding of what it means to ‘calm down’, and how their own behaviors connect to those of the 123 Robot.
Standard name: International Society for Technology in Education
(ISTE)
ISTE (3) Knowledge Constructor:
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
How Standard is Achieved:
In this Unit, students will use their 123 Robot to create projects that reflect their calm down behaviors, that can be used to help students practice those behaviors for themselves. Lab 1, students use Coder cards to create a sequence connecting human behaviors to robot behaviors. In Lab 2, students build on this, creating a more complex sequence representing a series of calm down behaviors for their robot to perform.
