Practice

In the last section, you learned how you can customize the the Driver Control program on the robot brain. Now you are going to apply what you have learned to drive your Clawbot to complete the Control and Collect practice activity.

In this activity, you will drive your robot to pick up and score a ring on the small post using the Driver Control program on the Brain. You will iterate on your drive configurations, so you can drive your robot to pick up and score a ring more easily.

Watch the video below to see how you can apply what you have learned to complete the Control and Collect practice activity.

Now it is your turn to complete the Control and Collect practice activity!

This animation shows one possible way your robot could move to collect and score a ring to complete the Control and Collect practice activity.

In the video below, the Clawbot is on the left side of the field. There are one Ring on the Field located near the top of the field, between the second and third tiles, and another near the bottom of the field. There is a single post in the middle of the field, towards the right side. The Clawbot drives to the second and third tiles and then moves up towards the first ring, picking it up. It then raises its claw and backs up. Next, it drives to the post and releases the claw, letting the ring fall onto the post.

As you complete the Control and Collect practice activity, document your driver control modifications and your engineering notebook.

  • What controller configurations did you use for driving and controlling the arm and claw?
  • How well were you able to manipulate the arm and the claw to pick up and place the ring on the post with each configuration?
  • How long did it take for the robot to move the ring to the goal with each test run?

See the image on the left for an example of how you can record your design ideas and tests.

Two notebook pages are shown together. The first notebook page has "Lesson 2 Practice" written across the top, and a sketch of the game field below including a Clawbot, a ring, and a scoring post. The second notebook page is titled "Driver Control" and contains a chart of different controller configurations, with the time of completion listed for each controller configuration.

Prepare for the Challenge

In Compete (on the next page), you will drive your robot to score two rings on the small post the Field in the Speed Claw Challenge. The fastest time, wins!  Learn how to compete in the challenge, check your understanding, then practice for the challenge.

The goal of this challenge is to grab and score both rings on the small post on the Field in the fastest time.

In the video below, the Clawbot is on the left side of the field. There are two rings on the field: one located near the top of the field, between the second and third tiles, and another near the bottom of the field, also between the second and third tiles. There is a single post in the middle of the field, towards the right side. The video starts with a countdown: 3, 2, 1. The Clawbot drives to the second and third tiles and then moves up towards the first ring, picking it up. It then raises its claw and backs up. Next, it drives to the post and releases the claw, letting the ring fall onto the post. Afterward, the Clawbot backs up and lowers the claw. It then drives to the second ring at the bottom of the field, picks it up, turns, and drives to the post. The Clawbot releases the claw, allowing the ring to fall onto the post. The timer stops at this point as the challenge is now completed, showing 21.22 seconds.

Follow the steps in this document to learn more about how to complete this challenge.
