Materials Needed

The following is a list of all the materials that are needed to complete the VEX GO Lab. These materials include student facing materials as well as teacher facilitation materials. It is recommended that you assign two students to each VEX GO Kit.

In some Labs, links to teaching resources in a slideshow format have been included. These slides can help provide context and inspiration for your students. Teachers will be guided in how to implement the slides with suggestions throughout the lab. All slides are editable, and can be projected for students or used as a teacher resource. To edit the Google Slides, make a copy into your personal Drive and edit as needed.

Other editable documents have been included to assist in implementing the Labs in a small group format. Print the worksheets as is or copy and edit those documents to suit the needs of your classroom. Example Data Collection sheet setups have been included for certain experiments as well as the original blank copy. While they offer suggestions for setup, these documents are all editable to best suit your classroom and the needs of your students.

Engage

Begin the lab by engaging with the students.

  1. Hook

Connect students to the idea of a robotics competition. Using what you know of other competitions, what might a VEX GO competition look like? How do you think you would compete with your robot? What would make a good teammate in a robotics competition?

  2. Leading Question

What kinds of things do you think a competition robot does?

  3. Build Competition Base + Competition Advanced

Play

Allow students to explore the concepts introduced.

Part 1

Introduce the house components and the goal of the Village Construction Competition. Then model how to connect a Brain to VEXcode GO, and use the Drive tab in VEXcode GO to remote control drive the Hero Robot on the Field. Students will take turns driving the Hero Robot to practice lifting and transporting the house components from its trailer/container to the Red Tile.

Mid-Play Break

Students will be introduced to the Village Construction Competition, and the goal of the competition of constructing new house structures on the Red Tile. They will discuss how they can apply what they have learned through their driving practice in Play Part 1, to help them successfully participate in the competition.

Part 2

Students will apply what they practiced in Play Part 1 to participate in the Village Construction Competition! Each team will try to score as many points as they can by lifting and transporting as many house components as they can, and then constructing 2 new house structures on the Red Tile with the house components (Brown Walls + Gray Walls + Roof) that they moved from the trailer/container. The Village Construction Competition is a one minute match played with the Hero Robot.
