Session 3: Driving Your Robot
Congratulations! Your Hero Bot is built and ready to go, and now it’s time to practice driving it! In this session, you will test out different Controller configurations and collect data to discover which one works best for you. You'll test them by completing a driving challenge. Then you'll complete a scoring challenge by scoring a Pin in a Neutral Goal and spinning the Toggle. Have fun exploring what your robot can do!
Before you begin, make sure you have the following ready:
- An assembled and set up VEX V5 Robotics Competition Override Field
- A built Hero Bot
- Charged controller and batteries
- An engineering notebook
Before you can drive the Hero Bot to complete your testing activity, you first need to learn how to use the built-in Drive program.
Running the Drive Program
There is a program already built into the Brain that allows you to drive the Hero Bot using the controller, without having to write any code. View the animation below and follow along to run the Drive program on the Brain.
The animation shows the following steps:
- Press the Drive icon on the Brain screen to select the Drive program.
- Press the Run icon to run the program.
- To stop the program, select the Stop icon.
Controller Configurations
There are four options for how to control the Hero Bot with the Drive program. Changing the controller configuration changes how the joysticks control the robot's movement. The default configuration is Dual drive. View the animation below to see how to select a configuration in the Drive program on the Brain.
The animation shows the following steps:
- Press the Drive icon to select the Drive program.
- Select the Controls icon to view the configuration options.
- Select 'Left,' 'Dual,' 'Split,' or 'Right' to view each of the configurations.
Activity: Driving Test
Now that you know how to run the Drive program and change the controller configurations, you're ready to drive Flex! You will practice driving the Hero Bot on the Field to test out the different configurations and find out which works best for you.

Use the task card (Google doc / .pdf / .docx) to guide you through the driving test and data collection.
- You will drive Flex in a figure eight pattern around the Goals on the Field.
- In your engineering notebook, you will record data about the controller configuration and how long it took to drive the path.
- You do not need any Pins on the Field for this activity. You can remove them to keep the focus on driving.

Each team member should get at least one chance to try driving in a figure eight pattern around the Goals on the Field in each of the four controller configurations!
This would be a good time to take a look at the ‘Engineering Design Process — Develop Solutions’ section of the Engineering Notebook Rubric ("Did we build, test, and decide" in the Student-Friendly version), and have a discussion about what sets the exemplary, proficient, developing and beginning categories apart.
Activity: Scoring Test
Now that you've tested driving around the Field, you're ready to try scoring a Pin! You will practice driving Flex and use the arm, claw, and roller to score a Pin in a Neutral Goal and then spin the Toggle to red to score more points.

- You will drive Flex to score a Pin in a Neutral Goal and then spin the Toggle to red to score more points.
- In your engineering notebook, you will record data about the driver configuration and how long it took to score the Pin and flip the Toggle.
- Make sure the Pin is preloaded for each test.
- If you need help changing the driver configuration, follow the steps in this article.
Each team member should get at least one chance to try to score the Pin and flip the Toggle using all four Controller configurations!
Wrap-up
Once everyone has completed both driving tests in all configurations, come together to discuss what your data tells you about your team.
In a VEX V5 Robotics Competition match, your team's robot plays alongside another team's robot as an alliance. That means you have two kinds of decisions to make: who drives for your team, and eventually, which teams you want to play alongside at an event. Now that you have some data from driving practice, you are ready to start making data-based decisions about both.
As a team, discuss:
- Who will drive, and who will take on the other drive team roles? A team may send up to three drive team members to the Alliance Station. Besides the driver, someone can watch the field and the clock and call out what they see, someone can handle any tasks the game allows from the Alliance Station, and drive team members are also the ones who talk to the head referee if the team has a question about a ruling.
- If you were choosing an alliance partner, what would you look for? Would you want a team that drives the way you do, or a team whose strengths cover something you are not as strong at yet?
Record your decisions and the rationale behind them in your engineering notebook.
Pro Tip:
- Your alliance partner drives their own robot with their own configuration, so matching configurations is not the goal. What matters is what each robot and driver does well. A driver who is fast and accurate at one task pairs well with a partner who covers a different one. Don't worry, you can revisit and adjust these decisions in future sessions as you learn more about the game and see other teams compete.
