Implementing VEX 123 STEM Labs

STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX 123. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX 123. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX 123 STEM Labs article.

Goals and Standards

Goals

Students will apply

  • How to create original projects using the 123 Robot, the Coder, and Coder cards.

Students will make meaning of

  • How symbols represent actions or behaviors in programming languages.

Students will be skilled at

  • Waking the 123 Robot.
  • Connecting the 123 Robot to a Coder.
  • Inserting Coder cards into the Coder.
  • Starting a project using the Coder.
  • Building a project with Coder cards to make the 123 Robot perform a specific action.

Students will know

  • That Coder cards are commands that represent actions or ideas, that can be executed by the 123 Robot.

Objective(s)

Objective

  1. Students will identify that the Coder cards use symbols to represent actions of the 123 Robot.
  2. Students will decompose a desired action into smaller behaviors with the Coder cards.

Activity

  1. In the Engage section, students will identify which behavior of the 123 Robot corresponds to a specific Coder card.
  2. In Play Part 1, students will decompose a desired action and plan their project using Coder cards.

Assessment

  1. In Play Part 1, students will identify which Coder cards are needed to create a project, so the 123 Robot completes a desired action.
  2. In Play Part 2, students will test their project using the Coder and 123 Robot.
