Session 1

In this session, you'll dive into the VEX V5 Robotics Competition Override game! You'll start by playing a virtual version of the game, practicing how to score by stacking Pins and Cups on Goals. Then, you and your teammates will work together to lay the foundation for a successful and exciting season.

Before you begin, make sure you have the following ready: 

  • A V5 Controller
  • A micro-USB cable to connect the Controller to your computer
  • Your Team Number and Virtual Skills Key
  • An engineering notebook

Engineering Notebooks

Your team will need to keep an engineering notebook throughout the season. This can be either physical or digital, and it should be used to document your team’s progress, design iterations, and learning. You will submit your engineering notebook to judges at events in order to be considered for certain awards. However, judging is not the only purpose for your engineering notebook. It will also be used for:

  • Communication within the team: Team members can read the notebook to know what they missed.
  • Data-based decision-making: Use the data in the notebook to support your ideas and make informed decisions about your robot, code, or strategy.

Your team will also need to submit three short summaries alongside your engineering notebook: a Season Summary, a Code Summary, and a Credit Summary. The summaries point judges to what matters most in the notebook so they make sure to look at the sections your team wants them to see during the notebook review.

  • The Season Summary is your team's one-page overview of its season.
  • The Code Summary is a one-page overview of how your code works.
  • The Credit Summary names any outside sources you used when building or coding, and gives them credit.

Judges will use a rubric to evaluate your notebook at a competition. Throughout this STEM Lab, you will find suggestions for comparing your notebook to specific sections of the rubric to help you establish what exemplary, proficient, developing and beginning notebooks look like.

Activity: Play Virtual VEX V5 Override!

Now that you know a little bit about the game, you're ready to play! You will use the VEX V5 Robotics Competition Virtual Driving Skills Practice to get started with the game.

Use this task card (Google doc / .pdf / .docx) to help you get started with Virtual Driving Skills Practice. 

Each person on your team should get at least one chance to practice driving and trying to score points in Virtual Driving Skills Practice. Have fun!

Activity: Setting Your Team Up For A Successful Season

Now that you’ve played the game and are excited about Override, it’s time to channel that energy into launching your season on the right foot!

Taking the time early on to figure out who you are as a team and how you’ll work together will set the stage for success—whether you're collaborating in a team meeting or competing at an event.

Everyone who is a part of the VEX V5 Robotics Competition is required to follow a Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct has six Commitments:

  1. Safety: Put student safety first, always.
  2. Respect: Treat every person with respect.
  3. Learning: Let students do the work and own their decisions.
  4. Integrity: Compete within the rules and own the result.
  5. Fairness: Follow the rules, and expect officials to follow them too.
  6. Reporting: Report concerns and violations, and protect those who do.

Everyone must also understand the Student-Centered Policy. This policy says that students should do the work of designing, building, testing, and coding the robot.

Your coach will lead you in a discussion about these important policies before you move on.

  • Turning your ideas of good teamwork into rules and guidelines.

Next, create a set of team rules following the process described in the video.  

  • Brainstorm a list of answers to the question: “What does good teamwork look like and feel like?” 
  • Use that list of answers to create an additional list to answer the question: “What actions are needed to ensure good teamwork?”
    • These answers should relate back to what good teamwork looks and feels like, which you described in the first brainstorm.
  • Look for common ideas in your lists and consolidate them into 3 or 4 big ideas for your team to use as rules.
    • Reference Rules G1 - G5 in the Game Manual for a place to get started. 
    • Make sure your rules and guidelines align with the Student-Centered Policy.

Be sure to add your team rules to your engineering notebook. 

This would be a good time to take a look at the Notebook Organization Section of the Engineering Notebook Rubric ("Is Our Notebook Easy to Use" in the Student-Friendly version) , and have a discussion about what sets the exemplary, proficient, developing and beginning categories apart.

Activity: Set Your Goals for the Season

To wrap up your Session, set 3 goals for the season. Now that you've gotten started and created your team rules, talk together with your coach about your goals for this season. Your goals can be simple, and should be about more than just winning or losing.

Create and document your goals in your engineering notebook:

  • 1 Teamwork Goal 
    • What will represent successful teamwork by the end of the season?
  • 1 Game-Related Goal 
    • What do you, as a team, want to accomplish with your robot in Override?
  • 1 Personal Goal per Team Member
    • How do you want to grow your skills this season? 5 girls on a robotics team smile and celebrate in a circle.
