Mid-Unit Reflection and Goal Adjustment
Now that you have completed several Lessons in this Unit, it is a good time to check in on how you are progressing towards the learning targets you created at the start of the Unit. In the Mid-Unit Reflection you will review your learning targets, reflect on your progress toward them, and adjust your goals if needed based on your reflections and experience in the Unit so far.
Prepare for Your Mid-Unit Reflection
Review Your Goals
Review the learning targets you established with your teacher at the beginning of the Unit. Consider what you have learned in this Unit so far about the use of conveyors within manufacturing, the importance of time-based movements for conveyor operations, and how to code the conveyors to move for the appropriate amount of time. Do the learning targets you set match what you have learned about? Discuss the connection between your learning targets and your experiences with your group and your teacher. Then, record your conversation in your engineering notebook.
How to Complete the Mid-Unit Reflection Organizer
You will assess your own progress toward your learning targets. Based on your self-assessment, you will discuss and adjust your learning targets with your teacher to ensure that you are able to make progress towards them effectively during the rest of the Unit. It is important that you are honest in your self-assessment, so that you have reliable evidence to base any adjustments on. Your learning targets are meant to guide your learning, so honesty in your reflection will only help support your learning.
Category | Learning Target | Rating | Evidence | Adjusted Learning Target |
---|---|---|---|---|
Skill | I can configure conveyor motors in VEXcode EXP. |
**Expert** Apprentice Novice |
I listed the steps for configuring each conveyor motor in my Engineering Notebook and successfully configured the motors in VEXcode EXP. |
When you reflect on your progress, consider the following:
- How would you rate yourself towards each of the learning targets? Use this table to help you determine which category you fall under.
Expert | I fully understood this concept and feel I could teach it to someone else. |
Apprentice | I understand the concept just enough to complete an activity. |
Novice | I do not understand this concept/ I could not complete an activity. |
- What evidence are you basing that assessment on? Be sure that your rating is accurate and supported by evidence from your engineering notebook, your answers to Check Your Understanding questions, and reflects your collaborative experience with your group working on the activities.
- You will likely have learning targets that you have not yet addressed in this Unit, and that is expected. You should rate yourself as a 'Novice', as you haven't learned about those concepts or completed those activities yet.
- Do you think you will be able to reach your learning targets by the end of the Unit? If not, why not? What questions do you need to answer in order to reach that learning target?
When you meet with your teacher to talk about your reflection, you will decide together if you need to adjust any learning targets to make them more accurately reflect your learning.
Be Prepared to Discuss With Your Teacher
Once you have completed your self-assessment, you will share your reflection with your teacher and discuss your progress toward your learning targets. During this meeting, you should be prepared to show your assessment and the evidence by which you based your assessment, ask questions, and have an honest conversation about your learning so far. This is your opportunity to ask questions and determine if you need to adjust your learning targets to better meet your needs.
Activity
Now that you know how to approach the Mid-Unit Reflection and Goal Adjustment, it is time to put that into practice!
- Complete your Mid-Unit Reflection and assess your progress towards your learning targets for the Unit. Use this organizer as the basis for your reflection (Google Doc / .docx / .pdf), and complete the first four columns for each of your learning targets. You will fill in the Adjusted Learning Targets section after you meet with your teacher. Write your reflection and any additional notes, or questions you have about the concepts you've learned so far in your engineering notebook.
- Bring your Mid-Unit Reflection to your meeting with your teacher. During your conversation with your teacher, you will share your assessment and how you got there. This is your opportunity to clarify your goals and ask questions to help you reach your learning targets. Based on this conversation, you and your teacher will decide together if any of your learning targets should be adjusted.
- Discuss your progress as a class. After you have completed your reflection and discussed it with your teacher, you will have a whole class discussion about your progress. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about concepts you are still learning, clarify anything that is confusing to you, share strategies for collaboration, and learn from and with other students, so that you can all reach your goals.
- Adjust your learning targets as needed. Based on your reflection and conversations with your teacher and class, use that information to adjust your learning targets and record them in your engineering notebook. Be sure to check in with your teacher to ensure that you agree on the new learning targets before moving on to the next Lesson.
