Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs
STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX GO. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX GO. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs article.
Goals and Standards
Goals
Students will apply
- Using the LED Bumper to start the Code Base when pressed.
- Using the LED Bumper to display colors.
Students will make meaning of
- Using the LED Bumper to display colors.
- Using the LED Bumper, when pressed, to start an action from the Code Base.
- Using example projects in VEXcode GO.
Students will be skilled at
- Using build instructions to build the Code Base - LED Bumper Top.
- Connecting a Brain to a tablet or computer in VEXcode GO.
- Coding the LED Bumper to display colors.
- Coding the LED Bumper, when pressed, to start an action from the Code Base.
- Saving and naming projects in VEXcode GO.
- Using example projects in VEXcode GO.
- Modifying a project by adding and removing blocks.
- Modifying a project by changing parameters in blocks.
- Starting and stopping projects in VEXcode GO.
Students will know
- That the LED Bumper has two functions: displaying colors and causing actions when pressed.
Objective(s)
Objective
- Students will identify that the LED Bumper can be used to display a color.
- Students will identify that pressing the LED Bumper can cause the Code Base to perform an action.
Activity
- In Play Part 1, students will use the 'Using the LED Bumper' example project in VEXcode GO. They will start the project and observe the LED Bumper display the colors red and green, then turn the display off.
- In Play Part 2, students will use the 'Wait until Push' example project to cause the Code Base to drive forward when the LED Bumper is pressed. They will then add to this project, to cause different behaviors to occur when the LED Bumper is pressed.
Assessment
- In the Mid-Play Break, students will discuss the behaviors of the LED Bumper and what happened when they started the example project.
- During Share, students will describe how the LED Bumper being pressed caused the Code Base to start driving.
