Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs

STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX GO. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX GO. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX GO STEM Labs article.

Goals and Standards

Goals

Students will apply

  • Using the [Energize electromagnet] block with Drivetrain blocks in a project to have the Code Base drive and move a Disk to a specific location.

Students will make meaning of

  • How to code the Code Base to solve a challenge, such as driving and picking up a Disk with the Electromagnet.

Students will be skilled at

  • Using build instructions to build the Code Base - Eye + Electromagnet.
  • Connecting a Brain to a tablet or computer in VEXcode GO.
  • Saving and naming projects in VEXcode GO.
  • Adding VEXcode GO blocks to a project.
  • Sequencing blocks in a project.
  • Using Drivetrain blocks in a project to have the Code Base drive to a specific location.
  • Changing parameters in VEXcode blocks.
  • Starting and stopping a project in VEXcode GO.
  • Creating a project in VEXcode GO that uses the Electromagnet.

Students will know

  • How the Electromagnet on the Code Base can be used to carry Disks.
  • That the [Energize electromagnet] block in VEXcode GO works with the Electromagnet to make it boost or drop a Disk.

Objective(s)

Objective

  1. Students will develop a VEXcode GO project using the [Energize electromagnet] block and Drivetrain blocks together to collect a Disk and return it to the Mars base.
  2. Students will identify that the Electromagnet on the Code Base - Eye + Electromagnet can be set to boost or drop to pick-up or drop a Disk.
  3. Students will communicate behaviors, through words and gestures, that the Code Base will need to complete in order to accomplish a task.

Activity

  1. In Play Part 1, students will build a project with the teacher that uses the [Energize electromagnet] block with Drivetrain blocks to drive the Code Base to a Disk, pick it up, then return to the Mars Base and drop the Disk.
  2. In Play Part 1, students will build a project with the teacher, where they will identify that they need to set the Electromagnet to boost to pick up the  Disk and drop to release it at the Mars base.
  3. During the Play sections, students will need to communicate in their groups as they build their projects. They will have to convey the behaviors that the Code Base needs to carry out in order to drive to and from the base to collect the Disk.

Assessment

  1. In Play Part 2, students will iterate on this project using the [Energize electromagnet] block with Drivetrain blocks to drive the Code Base to collect a Disk from a different location. In order to return it to the base successfully, they will have to sequence blocks correctly in their projects. During Share, they will discuss how the blocks worked in their projects to complete the challenge.
  2. In Play Part 2, students will identify where in their project the Electromagnet needs to be set to boost or drop in order to complete the challenge of collecting a Disk from a different location. By successfully picking up the Disk and subsequently dropping the Disk in its desired location, students will show their learning of how the Electromagnet functions within a VEXcode GO project.
  3. During the Mid Play Break and Share discussions, students will communicate how their Code Base moved in order to solve the challenge, as well as how the Electromagnet functioned in their project to pick up and drop the Disk in the desired location.
