Choice Board Examples & Strategies

Use the Choice Board to allow students to display their voice and choice within their learning. The Choice Board can be used in multiple ways by the teacher to:

  • Engage students who finish early
  • Assess what students have learned at different points throughout the Unit
  • Extend the Unit or lesson
  • Allow students to display their learning in the Share section

The Choice Board is intended to provide content that can be added to the classroom’s existing Choice Board or to any bulletin board in the classroom.

The following is the Choice Board for this Unit:

Special Delivery
A delivery of Bear food has arrived at the zoo! Imagine your 123 Robot is the delivery truck, and choose a corner of the Field to be the delivery entrance. Use the Coder to code your robot to drive from the delivery entrance to the Bears to drop off the food, and then back to the delivery entrance.
Heading Home
During the Lab, you created a project for the 123 Robot to drive from the Lions to the Tigers to the Bears. Now the 123 Robot needs to go home! Create a project using the touch buttons for the robot to drive back the way it came - from the Bears to the Tigers to the Lions and then the zoo entrance. Then create the same project using the Coder! Use the Side by Side Planning Printable to help plan a path.
Big Cats
Lions and Tigers are just two of the many big cats - there are others, like cheetahs, leopards and more. Choose one and use the Art Ring Canvas to turn your robot into one of them. Find out something your big cat would do, and create a Coder project to have your robot act it out!
Zoo Features
Think about some of the fun things a zoo has other than animals, such as snack stands and rides. Draw or make one and add it to the field. Then use the Coder to code the robot to drive to your new feature. Then, try to code the robot to drive to the same feature using different Coder cards!
Touch to Coder Challenge
Use the Side by Side Planning Printable to plan and then create a Touch project to code the 123 Robot to travel from one part of your zoo to another. Challenge a friend to complete the other side of the Printable to create the same project using the Coder. Then switch roles and do the activity again.
Plan a Path
Think about paths you must take each day when walking around your classroom and school, such as from your table to the classroom door, or from your classroom to the lunchroom. Choose one path, and write a list of all the steps you must take to get from from the beginning to the end. Share with a friend, and see if they can guess the path you planned.
