Implementing VEX 123 STEM Labs

STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX 123. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX 123. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX 123 STEM Labs article.

Goals and Standards

Goals

Students will apply

  • Creating a project using the Coder and 123 Robot to solve a challenge.
  • Sequencing Coder cards for the 123 Robot to drive from a specific starting point to a destination on a map.
  • Decomposing the path of the 123 Robot into smaller, discrete steps.

Students will make meaning of

  • Identifying that a sequence is a set of behaviors in a precise order.

Students will be skilled at

  • Waking the 123 Robot.
  • Connecting the 123 Robot to a Coder.
  • Describing behaviors of the 123 Robot.
  • Planning and testing a coding project on the 123 Robot.
  • Using Coder cards with the Coder to drive the 123 Robot on a specific path.

Students will know

  • How to use the Coder and 123 Robot to solve a challenge.

Objective(s)

Objective

  1. Students will create a coding project to make their 123 Robot navigate a map to solve a challenge.
  2. Students will explain the definition of sequence in relation to a coding project.

Activity

  1. Students will practice creating a coding project to drive the 123 Robot from one location to another in the Engage Section and during Play Part 1.
  2. During Engage and Mid-Play Break, students will describe how the sequence of Coder cards in their coding project affects the movement of the 123 Robot.

Assessment

  1. In Play Part 2, students will create a new coding project to successfully follow a specific path and travel to and from a prescribed location on a class map.
  2. Students will explain how they sequenced their Coder cards to get the 123 Robot to move from the starting point to the stopping point on the 123 Field Map, in Play Part 2 and Share sections.
