Implementing VEX 123 STEM Labs
STEM Labs are designed to be the online teacher’s manual for VEX 123. Like a printed teacher’s manual, the teacher-facing content of the STEM Labs provides all of the resources, materials, and information needed to be able to plan, teach, and assess with VEX 123. The Lab Image Slideshows are the student-facing companion to this material. For more detailed information about how to implement a STEM Lab in your classroom, see the Implementing VEX 123 STEM Labs article.
Goals and Standards
Goals
Students will apply
- How to use Drive cards in the correct sequence to drive the 123 Robot to Grandmother’s house.
- Using Drive cards in different sequences to drive to the same location.
Students will make meaning of
- How to code a robot to solve a problem, such as driving to a specific location.
Students will be skilled at
- Waking the 123 Robot.
- Connecting the 123 Robot to the Coder.
- Inserting and removing Coder cards from the Coder.
- Sequencing Coder cards in a project.
- Connecting the Coder to the 123 Robot.
- Using Drive cards in a project to have the 123 Robot to drive to a specific location.
Students will know
- That Drive cards code the 123 Robot to move specific distances.
- How to use Drive cards in the correct sequence to drive the 123 Robot to a defined location.
Objective(s)
Objective
- Students will collaborate in groups to work toward a common goal.
- Students will develop a coding project that sequences Coder cards in different ways to drive the 123 Robot to a defined location from different starting points.
Activity
- In Engage, students will work together to decorate their 123 Robot, using the Art Ring to turn their 123 Robot into the "Little Red Robot". In the Play sections, students will collaborate in their groups to create projects that drive the 123 Robot to Grandmother’s house.
- In Play Part 1, students will create a project that has the 123 Robot drive to Grandmother’s house from a fixed starting point. In Play Part 2, they will test different sequences of “Drive 1,” “Drive 2,” and “Drive 4” Coder cards to drive to the same location from different starting points.
Assessment
- In the Mid Play Break and Share sections, students will share their projects and describe how they worked together to build projects to reach Grandmother's house.
- In Play Part 2, students will create a project that successfully drives the 123 Robot to Grandmother’s house. During the Share portion, students will share their projects and compare how different sequences still accomplished the goal.
